Fort Hood Texas May 2 and 3 1998 !

Join the Mog Mailing List to trade info with other Unimog enthusiasts!

The big Fort Hood weekend! We had a blast, met lots of new folks and spent time
with old friends! Plus we got to see lots of different kinds of off road vehicles
in many different types of terrain!

Pullin the 5700Lbs Unimog with the Hummer was a chore! And what a site to see!
Hummers and Unimogs both normally get lots of stares and thumbs up but this
combination was really wild! Everywhere we went folks cranked their necks
till I thought they would break!

The Unimog FINALLY made it to Fort Hood, one of my very favorite places to
play offroad! I have had the Unimog for about a year and have been wanting to
make the 200mile trek to Ft. Hood with the Mog.
But, not wanting to drive the
Unimog for HOURS (hot and noisy!) We rented a trailer to take the Unimog
up to the army base training area while driving in the comfort of the Hummer!
Now, having the Unimog AND Hummer at the base we had to find a volunteer to
drive the Hummer!

Patricia my 16yr old daughter decided she would do it.
really had to twist her arm!

Fort Hood is the largest military installation in the United States!
The base in itself is a fascinating place to look around.

Acres and acres of Tanks and all kind of military vehicles you can imagine!

Now lets get at those trails!

These hills even make a Hummer looks small!

Glad to see Antonio and Elena come out with us for the first time with their Discovery!

Lance and Kim Sloan seemed to have a good time in their white D90 despite some CB troubles!

We had a large number of vehicles from all over Texas show up to play with us!

Patricia caught on pretty quickly and performed some amazing stunts with the Hummer!

UNTIL she found the deep mud pit! Even the dog wants to bail!
We tried to coach Patricia in driving techniques for MUD but she decided
to let me drive it out for her!

See the fat guy (me) climbing into the Hummer without sinking in the quicksand,
while patricia laughs and has a hard time keeping her balance!

See the fat guy (me) skillfully maneuver the truck back out of door deep muck! And
then drive it right back across with the utmost of ease! (Super Swampers helped alot) ........

Only casualty was the front license plate! Allan Madar (skinny guy) removes it totally so we don't loose it!
Allan Madar needs to be commended on having EVERYTHING someone would possible need on an outing!
Most of it hanging from his belt! Even Batman would be envious! ha ha
Thanks Allan!

The Unimog has no problem with the mud at all. The HUMONGOUS ground clearance does make a difference!

Alan Dobbs cant quite make the Mud pit with his D90!
But DJs big Chevy PU with the 38inch Swampers goes through fairly easily!

After such a good time in the mud pit we decided to go down in the creek and wash our trucks off!

After lunch we decided to explore the creek!
Alan and Mimi Dobbs in their Yellow D90 led us through an exciting and beautiful journey.

Until!! the water got too deep!

Ok, the Unimog probably has the deepest safe fording depth!
Lets sacrifice it instead of an expensive
Land rover or a Hummer!

We went way down the creek with the help of Jimmy (he borrowed some waders)
But even though the Unimog could easily go further we decided even if we did
the other trucks couldn't make it this far to pull us out when we do find our limit!
We turned around and headed back
What fun!!!!!!

The huge boulders and big rock piles were no match for the Unimogs HUGE tires and lockers!

Now that we are all fresh and clean from the sparkling creek water lets go see
if our trucks can conquer the deep deep mud pits! (logical?)

This is the famous "GLENNS PIT" where he stuck his brand new YELLOW hummer back in February at our Valentines day outing!

My wife (Suzanne) being very romantic from her fond Valentines day Memories
dared me to try to drive the Unimog through it! ARGH!!! were stuck!!!!

The Unimog was rescued by Patricia driving the Hummer

After two good STUCKS! We finally negotiated the PIT with the Unimog!
Look at that MUD!!!!!  Those tires are 37s!!!

YES! Unimogs can and DO get stuck!!!

With the Unimog doing quite well I was feeling pretty invincible, Alan Dobbs dared me to try and cross a big crack in the ground! DUH, ha ha ha, believe it or not I ALMOST made it! (ask Alan)! But as we all know ALMOST aint good enough! Notice Suzanne waiting patiently for the Mog to be rescued!

Nearing the time to leave on Sunday Alan and Mimi developed an overheating problem.
Cracked fan blade caused the fan not to spin!
Easy fix once they figured it out
What a GREAT weekend! Cant wait to do it again!
