My mog is in the early stages of clean-up and I'm simply using some Rustoleum "deep forest green" camouflage paint for spot touch-ups: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=124 It's not an exact match for the RAL 6014 but it's close enough and better than leaving bare metal or rust. It's also available at most stores (Home Depot, etc) In the long run, and if doing it correctly you'd want to properly prep the surface, apply an epoxy primer and then polyurethane top coat(s). > 2) Really protect the metal. I've got places where the paint is > peeling > off, and > the underlying metal seems to rust quickly when exposed to the > elements. Exposed metal can certainly flash over quickly, but the reality is that it takes many many years for metal to rust through unless its exposed to constant moisture and other accelerators such as salt. I witnessed the former this last weekend looking at abandoned cars from the 30's in the Bodie ghost town: Most of the metal was still in reasonably good shape even after sitting in the desert (and covered in winter snows) for 80+ years. That said, I'm the first one to quickly break out the sand paper or media blaster and attack any rust I see. At the very least put down some primer and then a basic rattle can top coat. The Duplicolor seems to be pretty tough, with the only downside being a longer hardening time (measured in weeks to months to fully cure). So you can see my strategy: quickly rattle can up the bumps and bruises, but save the real effort for a proper epoxy/polyurethane paint job. > > Thanks! > > Joe Gerber > 404.114 swiss troop carrier > > _______________________________________________ > Mog mailing list > Mog at tx4x4.com > http://tx4x4.com/mailman/listinfo/mog_tx4x4.com > http://tx4x4.com/mailman/options/mog_tx4x4.com > brought to you by http://www.installer.com From FDEBROS at PARTNERS.ORG Mon Aug 23 08:03:55 2010 From: FDEBROS at PARTNERS.ORG (Debros, Frederic M.,Md) Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 09:03:55 -0400 Subject: [MOG] 404 metal-protecting touch-up paint. I've got places where the paint is peeling off, and the underlying metal seems to rust quickly when exposed to the elements. Thanks! I had a rusted spot in the 10mm line from the rear to the front of the 406 mog, cut it out, slid a section of 300 psi tubing between the line ends, and clamped it. That 'temp' fix is going on 3 years. 3/8 ID hose works on 10 mm, and 5/16 hose works on 6 mm, etc. Bob --- On Mon, 8/23/10, Unimog406 wrote: > From: Unimog406 > Subject: [MOG] What size tubing for air line? > To: "Mog Mailing List" > Date: Monday, August 23, 2010, 9:50 AM > Hello All, > 406 Air lines question:? A true testament to the durability of the 404 portals. Craig's wheel and water filled tire combo puts the weight on each portal box at well over 300 lbs on each corner.
