The conclusion:

After getting the truck home and installing some replaced head bolts,
apparently you need to look at the newton meters side of the torque wrench
vs the foot lbs when torturing head bolts (likely why one had snapped during
the tranny swap) I fired up the motor but the tranny had a little
resistance.  I had the apply the clutch to start as starting in neutral
would cause the motor to drag to much to turn, plus my battery was half
dead.  After she started I could leave it idle in neutral with the clutch
out but I had a loud moan from the tranny.  Hoping it was just dry I did an
easy spin around the neighbor hood and it went away.

We hit Logandale over the weekend and there is something to say about a
working tranny.  Shifts great now, no more fighting gears, no more trying
for 6th and loosing so much speed you have to go back to 5th and the EPA
would be so proud, not 1 drop of oil from the tranny with all the new seals
I installed, well from the tranny anyways ;)

knowledge or experience with the Steyr 12 M 18 series of trucks?

I know they are a 5 ton, and all the technical details. I am looking for
direct comparisons to a 1300L, such as noise level in the cab, fuel
consumption, comfort, etc.

Also I am having a hard time verifying the type of 4WD system it has. I've
seen some info that says it is full time 4WD, with front, center and rear
lockers and a high/low t-case. Is this correct?

I am considering going to a larger platform for the next camper. I think the
1300L is still going to win out in the long run, but inquiring minds want to
know...

Paul,

we looked into the Steyr for a while for building up a bigger camper and 
if you want to go for a bigger platform its a good choice, roomy cab, 
good engine, faster than 1300, less noise. 5 ton is capacity, your info 
on the drivetrain is correct.

Finaly we decided to stay with the 417 because we wanted  the most 
compact vehicle possible for camper with real 4x4 abilities.

If you want some pics we took during this time when we looked up some 
Steyr i can mail them to you.

If you think the ECU is toast anyway, you might want to try the following as  
it can't hurt. ?In fact, why not try it with the old ECU? ?Take the ECU out  
and spray ALL of the signal carrying connectors liberally with WD-40 (as in  
Water Displacement Formula No. 40) as well as the ECU itself if you can see  
the circuit board. ?If you can disassemble it to see the circuit board(s),  
spray the board(s) with WD-40 on both top and bottom surfaces and on all the  
connectors. Also, disconnect ALL the connections elsewhere in the truck that  
carry signals and spray liberally with WD-40. ?Reassemble and reconnect.  
?See if it works. ?Can't do any harm. (You may want to look at any other  
circuit boards that are in the signal path (instrument panel?) and  
disassemble and spray them both on both surfaces and on the connectors.)
Theory of operation: ?there may be alternate signal paths due to  
condensation/salt water condensation/salt deposition/static electricity  
buildup that will cause signal errors. ?The ECU then shuts down when the  
errors appear. ?WD-40 both prevents condensation on the circuit boards and  
connectors that may be causing spurious signal paths and isolates the boards  
and connectors electrically from the environment. ?Old use: if you got  
moisture in your mechanical distributor, a good spray with WD-40 (or CRC-656)  
solved the problem. ?No need to dry anything out or to remove the film of  
WD-40. ?The film will protect components from moisture in the future and  
will not harm anything electrically as the film is non-conductive. ?As well  
as many other uses over the years, I saved about $1,500 recently in  
electrical circuit boards for both an electronic dishwasher and an electronic  
washer that were giving all sorts of strange error messages. ?The error  
messages from both the dishwasher and washer were false and were generated  
(IMO) by stray/spurious signal paths due to humidity/precipitation from  
evaporated condensation/static electricity buildup.

We arrived in Los Alamos after several days in the Sangre de Christo mountains of northern New Mexico. Enjoy the photos.  We will be meeting with local moggers here in Los Alamos tonight (Patrick Kennedy) and tomorrow with KC Carpenter et al is the ALBQ area.

We are guessing that we are about 10 days away from home.  Returning will be bittersweet as there will be tons of actions to accomplish but it will be nice to sleep in our own bed.

It's mine. It's going on a U500 stretched to 4200mm (camper frame is 17.5') - if 
I can every get to AC to pick it up.
The size isn't as dramatic as it seems. the main cabin is about 9 feet with the 
space that's normally under the cab area filled in. So the cabin area is not as 
big as the regular Alaskan 10'.
It's a pretty straight forward Alaskan. Two differences are that it takes a 
normal 10" spring mattress, and the interior height is 5" taller than normal. 
Camper height is designed to be close to the top of the cab.

App "Google Goggles" will auto translate text from German (and many other
languages) to English. Now I don't speak a lick of German (its on the to-do
list) And it sucks to try to type it into Google/yahoo/bablefish translate,

I made a short video using a camera phone to record another camera phone
(its all I have) so you'll probably have to watch it in high quality to get
the full effect. I apologize for the quality and shakiness, but it gets the
point across.

I now know:

That according to the sticker on the shift indicator panel says:

"Put shifter in Neutral Before starting"

The Sticker above the speedo says:

"Turn off auxiliary heater before tilting cab"

The sticker on the Glove box says:

"Emergency calls Channel 1, listening channel 2, ect"

Oh I'm having to much fun...

When I was a "newbie" trying to decide what flavor of Mog to buy, Jack  
Russell told me, "Enjoy looking around at all the toys, but if you  
want an off road truck, you will eventually settle on a U1300L.  Get  
one of the ex BW models."  I guess I agree with Bob's pronouncement  
below.
