Message-ID: Moggers: There we were, driving along on a dirt road along the Mogollon Rim in Arizona, minding our own business. We had not seen another vehicle in hours and we came upon what first appeared as a forest fire. As we got closer, it turned out to be a controlled burn with a bulldozer close at hand, piling the timber into a heap so it would burn better. When the dozer driver saw us, he pulled onto the trail and got out of the cab. He came over to talk and I thought that he was going to say that the road was closed due to the fire. But, that was not the case. Turns out he has a 404 that he got for the price of a tow. Some owner in CA abandoned the rig in the forest some years earlier and when the owner was contacted, he declined to pay the $800 tow bill and this fellow, a USFS worker, got the 404 for the price of a tow. What a deal. What is the chance that you can be driving along on some random back road and meet someone with a story like this? Dear pent...oop, wrong publication! I have two stories really. One day we went to the Local Mercedes Dealership in the Unimog, I was looking for 8mm Synflex airline (don't ask...wow is it loud when you cut one of those with your head jammed up between the transmission and frame!) and when we came out, there was an English Gentleman waiting by our Mog. Turns out he was a Fire/Rescue Unimog driver in England, and drove a Unimog almost exactly like mine! We swapped stories and he was very knowledgeable, a true enthusiast. He even informed me of most of the gear that would have fit in my drawers. He had a grin ear to ear to see a firemog in person. The second story I was waiting for my wife in the Mighty mog at the end of the road right beside the driveway. A guy drove by in a VW diesel, then I seen him whip around on the highway and come to talk. I rolled down the window and he started speaking German (again...on my list of things to learn...) and he got right away that I didn't. He switched to my dialect, and I noticed he was even wearing a very well weathered Unimog hat. It was really fun to be at the dealership and the guys telling me my Unimog was a:) Illegal to run on the road and b:) Not made by Mercedes, I must have put that emblem on the front ;) Keeping in mind the people/sq mile up here is far less than most area's, I've met quite a few enthusiasts, and as it seems in the mog community, all are really nice. -Trev 1988 U1300L RW1 On 2010-09-01 4:30 PM, "Paul" wrote: I had a guy walk up to me at a ferry terminal in BC. My gf works for the USFS here in Arizona and got word of an abandoned 404 mog up in the forest. It had been sitting there for quite a few years and had either blown the tranny or the engine. They were originally wanting me to go recover it since getting an offroad tow that far back there would have been expensive, and the USFS has to pay for recoveries of abandoned vehicles. I offered to go get it for free since I've got access to a few mogs that could do it using tow bars front and rear, but one of the USFS employees decided to go get it (or pay for the tow, I guess). Shortly after, Niki (my gf) told me it went to one of the forest service fire fighters. I haven't seen it since he got it.. Pretty cool that you ran into the guy in the middle of nowhere and it sounds like he has the Mog bug now, too! I've actually got some photos of that particular 404 in the wild. With the old camo paint, it was almost invisible sitting where it was. Had a nice, straight, drop-side flatbed on it, too.
