I think I would have asked them how sure of themselves they were.  Either
Shut up or put your money where your mouth is.  Especially at a Benz
Dealership.  By the time they saw the Vin, and placards in the cab I'm sure
they would have been apologizing. And or the Star symbol on the valve cover,
side of motor, ETC.

I got the same sort of reception at the San Diego M-B Dealership.  I  
was shopping for a new sedan and was the only customer in the whole  
place.  Out numbered by salesmen 6 to 1.  Only two of them even  
acknowledged the blue U1300L sitting right in front of their big  
showroom window, and those two assured me that the truck was not built  
by M-B and was certainly illegal.  I didn't buy the E class sedan.

We got the cold shoulder when we showed up in our 1300.  They denied that the elephant was in the room.  Oddly, they were on me like stink on shit when I show up in my BMW M5 a few weeks later.

I, like Mark, was less than nice to them.  As a side note I have a buddy with an E500 and he has had plenty of issues, some of which were throwing undocumented error codes. On an expensive, but common, sedan!

Shame on them.

About a week after I purchased my 404, I drove it to the local MB dealership
in Corpus Christi, TX. At the time, I had no knowledge of EI, SAV, or
Eurotech, so when I noticed one of my lug nuts was missing I thought I would
ask the maintenance department if they could help me out.

They were more than helpful, and I had a very positive experience. The parts
manager gave me contact info for the major parts suppliers, and offered to
order anything I needed (for a fee...of course). One of the mechanics that
worked there actually maintained a local 404 and happened to have a used lug
nut in his tool box. I found out later that this particular MB dealership
had sold several Swiss 404s from their lot in the past, so they were already
familiar with them.

I visited my local dealer (Smythe Mercedes) and asked about parts for  
a *Mercedes* 404 (simple things like rubber hoses) and he wouldn't  
give me the time of day.

I was  very polite, and suggested some ways to track things down.  I  
reminded the guy the hoses were likely the same from other cars that  
had m180s and he wouldn't budge without a part number and was no help  
in finding one.  He literally stonewalled me.

Adding to the rude service was a sales guy: When I parked my Jeep TJ  
(very clean and nicely set up, but not a Mercedes) in the customer  
parking area and asked where the parts counter was... "You'll have to  
park around back".  Ok I thought, the parts area is far away.  But, it  
was tens of feet away and he didn't want my Jeep lowering the aura of  
all the new shiny cars.

I almost contacted their regional sales manager after that event, but  
figure karma will find its way back there.  I'm certainly never buying  
a car at that dealership.

BTW, I then went to Pep Boys and asked the same questions.  They guy  
there was super polite, and gave me free access to their back area  
where all the hoses are stored to fish around for something that might  
work.  30 minutes later I had some donor hoses of the right sizes, and  
they had some a satisfied customer.

Thats not MB specific, the 740 BMW of my collegues father in law had 
electronic issues from day one on till he gave it back to the dealer 
after a frustrating year and switched back to an E class again. E class 
MBs running here in Germany as taxies usually make 600 - 800k km in 3 
years.

Nothing to say against BMW in general - i own a R11GS and love the bike, 
runs great and very reliable (like my E220CDI)

This seems to be the situation with German vehicles in general including Mercedes, they are well engineered to the point they show the road to follow but after the engineers turn in their work the bean counters under the direction of the purse holders pick up and they go in a shopping spree buying the cheapest crap they can get their hands on. (Most of the times the offending failures are trinkets  but many times good enough to leave you stranded)

This policy has cost Mercedes dearly in reputation, satisfaction and sales, in Germany the situation was getting embarrassing for Mercedes, some voices were even calling Mercedes the most unreliable vehicles on the market.

At one time Mercedes was predicted to become the largest automobile manufacturer in the world taking into account their truck and busses and other, they squandered their golden opportunity with brilliant ideas like Shrimp?s stroke of genius by buying Chrysler for 30 BILLION then paying billions more satisfying warranty repairs and losses and finally paying 5 BILLION to unload Chrysler as an incentive for the next buyer.  

Mercedes not too long ago had the largest budget for R&D of all vehicle manufacturers and only a handful of companies around the world had a bigger budget in that area, Mercedes was producing thousands of patents per year, ( I can?t remember if EADS is included in the tally)  today they can?t afford that anymore. Some envisioned for this super company to call the premium cars Mercedes Benz and Maybach with the general commercial vehicles  being Daimler Benz.

Is all academic now, is easy to ruin a reputation and hard to clean a name, the word is that the new vehicles have excellent quality after hitting the bottom of the barrel but Toyota took the place, at one time buyers were willing to go to the extra length of paying a premium price for genuine quality, now the number of skeptics its got to be pretty high..

Interesting pix of the red 416 on page 5,  a hard cab with the roof panel 
removed. I'm assuming that it's part way thru a restoration, but it would be 
a great way of inserting a roll cage, add the halo last. You could even 
leave it removable for wheeling on hot days, I know my 406 gets toasty in 
the cab in summer.

I think the Draper mog was getting tugged, lockers not working or something...

The white diesel G belongs to a nice fellow named Craig. I'm not sure who owns 
the Silver 4 door.

Thanks for the photos! I did racing/stock photography for a lot of the
radio control companies/magazines out there for a few years, if you
can handle photography on 10th scale, the real deal is a cake walk!

Looks like lockers are the issue. You can see the blur of movement in one 
wheel and not the other in a few of the photos.
